The BA in Communication Design at the Folkwang University of the Arts embodies craftsmanship and digital proficiency. It combines project-based applications with open experimentation, concrete design challenges with creative processes. It merges practice and theory, stimulates group discussions as well as one-on-one mentoring. It encourages sociopolitical reflection alongside individual artistic creation. It is about acquiring technical expertise while simultaneously developing an independent design identity.
Image. Text. Code.
Communication Design at the Folkwang University of the Arts embodies contemporary, interdisciplinary design through three branches: image, text, and code. These three creative fields are always at play—and in interplay—when shaping content. For this reason, all students receive foundational training in these essential areas. Throughout the program, they are introduced to diverse teaching personalities and, consequently, to different pedagogical perspectives.
Versatile. Intensive. Interdisciplinary.
The Bachelor’s program begins with an intensive foundational education in the three key areas: image, text, and code. Students build upon this base to refine and expand their skills. Because they quickly begin workingon individualized projects, they are able to actively experience design processes and engage with design theory. The program encourages open, experimental workflows and interdisciplinary projects, allowing students to critically operate in personal, cultural, and sociopolitical contexts while exploring the content, functions, and disciplines of design.
As the students progress through the program, their elective opportunities expand each semester. Those interested may also enroll in courses in photography and industrial design, enabling them to broaden and specialize their knowledge. This approach promotes independent creative thinking and helps students develop their personal stance as designers.
