Merlin Flügel
Lecturer in 3D Animation & Expanded Realities
Merlin Flügel is a director and animator. In his animated short films, he explores social structures and examines the rules that shape interpersonal relationships. His work is characterized by a graphic visual language in which a playful approach to form, rhythm, and narration creates unexpected connections. At its core lies a search for modes of representation and communication that are only possible through the language of animation.
His films are regularly featured at international film festivals, including the Berlinale, Pictoplasma, the Melbourne International Film Festival, and the Philadelphia Film Festival. His film Rules of Play was awarded Best Experimental Animation at CutOut Fest in Mexico and received the Jury Prize at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, among others.
At Folkwang University of the Arts, he teaches 3D Animation & Expanded Realities, guiding students to understand technical tools as an extension of their artistic and design expression and to develop new forms of digital storytelling.
